The Korea Composite Stock Price Index rose 0.7 percent, or 8.24 points, to close at 1,226.71.... South Korean shares rise...

"Financial shares, which are sensitive to the domestic economy, were helped by better consumer sentiment data," said Kim Joo-hyeong, an analyst at Tong Yang Securities.

Woori Finance Holding Co., the parent company of Woori Bank, gained 4.7 percent. Korea Exchange Bank gained 3.7 percent while top lender Kookmin Bank rose 2.4 percent.

South Korean consumer sentiment rose to a five-month high in October on growing confidence that the economy is recovering in the second half, the government announced.

Decliners outpaced gainers 440 to 320 with 66 stocks unchanged. Twelve stocks were up by their daily 15 percent limit, while two were limit down.
