"Just when you think you've read it all in this column, another fascinating inquiry surfaces. Now, someone wants to know how to get rid of a mouse in their house without killing it, and they have a cat. One wonders if Tim Rowland is writing this column. Anyway, the first thing the mouse lover should do is get rid of the cat, since cats don't understand that mice are entitled to nine lives, too. Then, put a leash on the mouse and take it to the SPCA where someone can adopt it and give it a nice home."

"To the person with the mouse in their apartment. Put (pure) oil of peppermint on cotton balls and put them in the corners of each room. Do not confuse with the peppermint flavoring in the grocery store. Check with a vitamin stores or organic/natural foods stores for this product. Also check online. There are numerous books on the market containing natural ways to deter critters and pests. Good luck."

"A writer asked how the illegal Latinos are obtaining a driver's license. The answer seems to be that they are not. My insurance agent told me that even the legals are driving without a license, with expired care registration and no insurance, make sure you're well insured because they aren't going to pay. I have a police monitor and every day I hear several stops where the above is true even legal Americans are guilty. Taking a drunk driver's license doesn't stop him from driving if he wants."

"Sen. Charles Schumer is proposing a bailout of the people who are in trouble of having their mortgages foreclosed. If you think about this, it is a bailout of the mortgage companies who lent the money to people who could not afford them in the first place. It will be taxpayer money again to the rescue as it was in the savings and loan bailout. If the're going to give money away, I think we should all get some."

"There were those who predicted severe economic damage to local restaurant businesses when the partial smoking ban was enacted several years ago. Since then, about three dozen new restaurants have been built around Hagers-town and most evenings you have to wait in line to get a seat at any of them. If any smokers want to leave town because of the complete smoking ban, we won't be upset. Maybe we can be seated quicker."

So the USA is the 'World Police?' Who died and gave the USA the absolute authority to say which country can and can't have nuclear weapons? The USA military is just loaded with nuclear warheads buried in silos all over the country, and probably some buried elsewhere in one of our 'territories.' Who says we aren't the threat?"

"I live on Belview Avenue. Here we go again; the City of Hagerstown may grant the OK for a developer to build duplexes on the ground around the American Legion off Northern Avenue. Then they want to extend Belview Avenue and Woodland Way out to Northern Avenue. This is ridiculous. Our neighborhood is quiet. We've lived here a long time, and we don't wqnt this. We don't need more construction."

"On Easter Sunday I went to a Easter service and sunrise service breakfast and a regular service at St. Peter's Beard Lutheran Church on Old Forge Road outside of Smithsburg. I've been to a lot of church services, and this definitely was one of the most inspirational. I'll definitely go back there. Rev. Baker was one of the best speakers I've ever heard. The people were the most friendliest people I've ever been around. This church is definitely underrated, and there needs to be more people come and check out the friendly atmosphere."

"I am not a smoker; never have been, never will be - but I think Maryland has done a big disservice to the smokers of their state. It is their right as American citizens to smoke when and where they want. I would much rather be among 12 smokers than one chewing tobacco person. Now they will tax you extra. You are the losers. You're supposed to be Maryland, the Free State. I would not want to be in Maryland anymore."

"I see in today's paper, Wednesday, that they are going to start giving tickets for the people who fail to move their vehicles when they sweep the streets. That's the best thing they could do. They should have done that a long time ago. They should sweep people right off their feet - ha ha - with a great big ticket. I live on Washington Avenue, and I can't tell you the times that the signs are up, it tells you when they're gonna sweep the streets, it gives you plenty of notice, and some of the people, they just don't care. They do not move their car, and I've watched the poor guys sweeping will come and go around the cars, and that's ridiculous."

"I'm thoroughly convinced that a 16-year-old child has no business driving a vehicle. They are definitely the most dangerous, the most daring, and have no respect for other vehicles. They have no respect for stop signs, red lights, or anything else. I'm thoroughly convinced that it would be better for them not to be able to get their driving license until later in life."

"Someone called in and said Social Security is to be a supplement; however, with statistics showing that close to 50 percent of the population are living paycheck to paycheck, it becomes difficult to save for retirement, with rising gas prices, food bills and the upcoming rise in electric and water bills. Many of us making good money do not have our salaries increased as much as these other bills."

"I would like just to know if it's wrong for me to feel more pain and sorrow when I see an animal abused or killed than when I do a human. Could somebody please answer me that?"

"This is in response to the article that was in Wednesday evening's paper about children in Boonsboro flying kites if there are live wires around. Kite flying is only a special time of the year, and that's in the spring when there's a nice breeze. Let the kids have a good time, as long as they're not damaging anything. I don't understand the problem."

"Here's something to solve the problem. Instead of extending the tours for the poor boys and girls over in Iraq and Afghanistan, just go back to the draft. Go back to the draft and everybody's got a fair share in this war. Then you don't have to worry about it. Put over 500,000 troops like they did in 'Nam, and see it won't work like it did in 'Nam."

"OK, enough is enough. In the paper today I saw four pictures of the same two people in the same place on vacation - just different locations. This is a little ridiculous. "

"Considering the negative connotation of steroids and what it implies, I find it disappointing that the school board member, Ms. Wagner, chose to use it to describe it for the summer school for our county. I think a better choice of descriptive words could have been used. "

"Calling about the Thursday paper, page A3, 'City to meet state to discuss ways to fund wastewater treatment plant upgrade.' It just cracks me up every time I read something like this. You got people like Bruce Zimmerman that say 'Despite the proposed sewer rate increase, Hagerstown's sewer tax will remain among the lowest in Washington County.' Hagerstown is pretty much Washington County. When people think Washington County, you don't think Smithsburg, Boonsboro, Clear Spring, Hancock, (etc.); you think Hagerstown. I've been born and raised in Hagerstown, so don't be offended by how I'm talking, I'm just sick and tired of people trying to pull the wool over your eyes or something. It just sounds too shady that Hagerstown is being compared with rates from Boonsboro, etc. and all these surrounding small towns."
