Chennai: Various farmers' associations in Tamil Nadu today resolved to stage a state-wide agitation on October 26 to protest against the ''anti-farmer'' attitude of the AIADMK Government.
A resolution to this effect, which was adopted at the meeting of state office bearers of the associations, said the protest demonstrations would be held in all block headquarters in Tamil Nadu.
The meeting, chaired by DMK Farmers Wing Secretary K P Ramalingam and held in the presence of Mr K Balakrishnan and Dr Durai Manickam, General secretaries of the CPI(M) and CPI-affiliated Tamil Nadu Farmers Associtions respectively, also resolved to seek the support of all the opposition parties in the state.
They alleged that Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had deceived the farmers by not sanctioning money to cooperative banks towards waiver of interest on farm loans and failing to pave way for grant of fresh loans to farmers.
The farmers had suffered losses to the tune of several crores as the government failed to provide them the State Advisory Price (SAP) for sugarcane in the last four years, they alleged.
This year, the government, with an eye on the coming Assembly elections, had announced enhanced SAP for sugarcane. But it failed to work out any mechanism to ensure that the private sugar mills also paid the SAP, they said.
As the government failed to desalt the canals, tail-end areas in the Cauvery delta regions were yet to receive water though the Mettur Dam was full, the associations alleged.
Later, the office bearers called on DMK President M Karunanidhi and briefed him about the decisions taken at the meeting while seeking his support. They also proposed to meet leaders of other opposition parties and seek their support for agitation.
